In 2006, a Midwest corrugator/converter contacted us the day after an interior dust collector fire; resulting in weeks of lost production. A brief investigation concluded that the baghouse did not meet NFPA combustible dust codes. IAS provided an NFPA code review, which resulted in the need of several dust collection system upgrades.
First, a new and larger baghouse would now be located outside, and would be equipped with explosion venting and a deluge water valve.
Second, a Flamex Spark Detection and Extinguishing System was designed and installed to protect the baghouse from sources of ignition.
"The client has not experienced a fire event since."
Third, a pair of Rodair high speed abort gate dampers were installed to, one, protect the baghouse, and two, to protect the return air ducting in case of a baghouse fire or a broken filter bag.
Fourth, the material handling fans were lined with brass to prevent sparking in case of a shaft or bearing failure.
Fifth, an explosion detection and extinguishing system was installed to protect the drop-out box, as this device was inside the building and could not be properly explosion vented. The client has not experienced a fire event since.
